Universal Overall Denim

Founded in Chicago in 1924 by brothers Max and Joe Eckerling, Universal Overall began with bib overalls, coveralls, work shirts, and painter’s pants. The company moved into industrial uniforms in the late 1970s. A Japanese collector of vintage American workwear later revived the name with the founding family’s support and access to its archive, and the Tokyo-run line, marketed as “Born in Chicago, Bred in Tokyo,” reissues archive patterns. Its classic work pants, coveralls, and shop coats have long been popular with Japanese fans of American workwear.
