About UES

UES traces its start to 1967, when it began in Japan as a baby clothing manufacturer before becoming a denim and workwear brand. Its name approximates the English word “waste,” a deliberate provocation by founder Masaharu Matsumoto, and his son Chuji has run the company since 2003. UES says its clothing is made entirely in Japan, with denim woven on antique shuttle looms from hand-picked, defoliant-free cotton. The brand is known for denim that develops character as it fades, and its Osaka store stamps the purchase date onto each jean’s leather patch.
